Which are the best types of wood for timber gutters?

Some woods are better than others for use in timber guttering. Good examples include Scots Pine, Elm, Cedar and Sweet Chestnut. The choice of wood might vary depending on availability in the region; for example, pitch pine was used in North America, chosen for its high resin content. What are the pros and cons of wooden gutters?

If you're looking to complement the look of a historical building, then using wooden gutters is a plus. Using a wood that will withstand moisture for long periods will ensure the long life of your gutters.

Wooden gutters require highly skilled joinery to ensure that there aren't any leaks, and while the outer edge requires painting, the inner gulley needs to be finished with a non-drying oil, such as shingle oil. All this needs to be factored in when planning the installation.

Like any wooden structure that's exposed to the elements, there's a higher degree of maintenance required to prolong the lifespan of your wooden gutters. To prevent your gutters from splitting or cracking, they'll need to have their paint refreshed every few years. Additionally, you'll need to make sure that the inside of the gutters are adequately oiled to protect them from moisture. Lastly, make sure your gutters are clear of debris. If the guttering becomes clogged, the debris will trap and hold water, which will increase the risk and speed of damage. Check and clean your gutters at least once a year. The cleaner they're kept, the longer they will last.
