Widely used for framing and non-load bearing walls, CLS or Canadian Lumber Standard timber is kiln-dried, planed and graded to ensure maximum stability, strength and durability. Both CLS and Scant timber have specific uses. Scant timber is planed on all four sides and has squared corners, whereas CLS timber has rounded corners and more accurate sizes. Scant timber is commonly used for rafters, while CLS is widely used in the construction of stud walls, which are then faced with plasterboard and lined with insulation.
