Treated Timber Posts

Wood that is used outdoors needs extra protection from rain, bugs and rot. Treated timber has special chemicals added to make it last longer outside, and this is particularly important when the wood is in contact with the ground. The most common way to treat wood is called pressure treatment. The wood is put in a large container where air is removed, and then chemicals are pushed deep into the wood using high pressure. After this, the wood dries before being ready for sale.

Our square fence posts are strong, ideal for supporting a range of fence panels. Both types are treated to resist weather damage. We also stock fence post caps which are designed to be mounted on top of posts to improve their appearance and protect the end grain from water. They fit different post sizes and can be painted the same colour as your fence. For garden edges and marking out areas, our treated pointed pegs work well. These short pieces of wood are pressure treated so they won't rot when pushed into the ground.

Most treated timber gets what's called ACQ Class 4 treatment. This means it can have contact with the ground and still last a long time outdoors. The treatment stops rot and keeps insects away. The greatest benefit of using treated timber is that it lasts much longer than regular wood when used outside. You can still paint or stain it any colour you like, even though it has been treated.

One thing to remember is that treated timber isn't ideal for areas where food is prepared or where small children play frequently because the chemicals that protect the wood aren't meant to be touched a lot or ingested. For inside your home, regular untreated wood is usually better.
