Hammers

For both DIYers and professional tradespeople alike, hammers are an essential tool. There are actually several dozen different types available, with the two most popular probably being claw, and frame.

Claw hammers are probably the most common type and are found in most households, tool kits, and on construction sites. These have a flat face on one side and a claw on the other. A curved claw hammer is suitable for general domestic use or light carpentry and makes pulling nails much easier, whilst a straight claw hammer can be used for demolition work, prying apart boards, and framing. A finish hammer is a smaller type of claw hammer that is popular for carpentry and delicate work.

Frame hammers are also fairly popular. These have a straight claw and are considered essential for builders and carpenters. They have longer handles and heavier heads, allowing them to generate greater force. This makes them ideal for heavy-duty woodwork and driving large nails into wood, for example, in frames and trusses. These are usually made from steel or fibreglass, and the face can be either smooth or milled.

When choosing the most suitable hammer for your project, you should consider the weight (heavier hammers are better suited for tough jobs whilst lighter versions are better for precise tasks and detailed work), the length of the handle (this affects control and leverage), and the grip (for safety and comfort). You may also want additional features such as nail starters, anti-vibration technology, or replaceable parts.

Other, more specialist types of hammer include ball-peen hammers (often used in metalworking), brick hammers (also known as "mason's" hammers), drywall hammers, and rubber mallets (for gentle tapping/assembly work).
