When it comes to fasteners for woodwork, panel pins are often preferred to standard nails. Although similar to nails, panel pins are usually shorter, narrower, and have a smaller, inverted cone-shaped head. Despite being narrower, these pins are still able to offer excellent holding strength.

The unique design of these pins offers a reduced risk of splitting - even on brittle timbers. The cone-shaped head enables clean entry without damaging the surface. When used correctly, panel pins can be almost invisible and can be painted. Because they offer better control than standard claw hammers, tack hammers or pin hammers should be used to drive these pins.

The applications for these pins include joining skirting-board edges, furniture or cabinet making, fixing decorative wooden mouldings, securing cupboard/drawer/wardrobe backs, and more delicate woodwork projects in general. Standard nails are often too bulky for these applications, and may also cause splitting, which can potentially ruin a piece of work.

These pins are mostly suited to indoor applications as they usually have an uncoated finish. For outdoor projects, galvanized/treated nails or screws are probably a better option.
