Lintels & Metalwork

Lintels and metalwork are crucial parts of any construction project. They provide crucial support for windows and doors to enable them to safely cope with the weight of the bricks above. Without them, the structure may well collapse.

The two most commonly used types of lintels are metal lintels and concrete lintels, although timber, stone, and brick lintels also exist.

Metal lintels are available in several varieties and are a popular choice for many. They are flat, can easily be obscured by bricks, and are made in numerous shapes/sizes. They can be used with cavity walls or solid walls, and they are available in standard and heavy-duty varieties. Here at George Hill, we stock galvanised steel lintels in a variety of sizes.

Concrete lintels are often used for larger openings with high loads and are common in both residential and commercial buildings. They are sometimes reinforced with steel to give them additional strength and durability. Most concrete lintels are also resistant to fire and moisture. Here at George Hill, we stock wet cast concrete lintels in various sizes.

As well as lintels, we stock a range of construction metalwork, including joist hangers, restraint straps, wall ties, and frame cramps. Joist hangers are special components used for securing wooden joists onto beams. This helps to encourage better load transfer and distribution. They can connect wood to wood or wood to masonry. Restraint straps are flexible metal connectors that are found in modern buildings. They help to reduce movement/cracking of walls and are available in light or heavy duty versions.

Wall ties are connectors that are used to connect the inner and outer leaves of a cavity wall. They are usually made from galvanised or stainless steel, and there are several types, notably the helical tie and the plate tie. Frame cramps are small metal devices that are used to fix or tie different materials together. They are usually made from stainless steel and are particularly useful for connecting masonry to adjacent supports.
