Multi Layer Insulation

Multi layer insulation (MLI) is a specially-designed type of thermal insulation that aims to reduce the amount of radiation heat that is lost.

It typically consists of several layers of aluminium or aluminised materials, which are separated by spacers that are made of fibrous materials. The thickness of a single layer is usually around 10 micrometres, whilst the spacers tend to be between 50 and 70 micrometres thick.

Using multi layer insulation is considered the most-effective method for thermal insulation. It is effective at a variety of pressure levels, and can achieve substantial thermal conductivity.

When it comes to domestic use, multi layer insulation is commonly used in roof spaces, lofts, between walls, and under floors. Not only is this type of insulation an effective way of keeping a space warm in the winter months, it also actually helps to keep things cooler in the summer months, by reflecting heat that is absorbed by the roof.

Domestic multi layer insulation will usually have a breathable membrane which helps to prevent condensation and vapour build-up.

When deciding on which insulation products to use, you need to take into account the intended location, installation requirements (i.e. can you do it yourself or might you need a professional?), the age of the property, the thickness of the walls, your budget, and the lifespan required. Some multi layer insulation products can last up to 50 years.
